Furniture after renovation – storage and maintenance

Dear Customers,

Thank you for using the services of our company and we hope that you will be satisfied with our work. Let us introduce you to the technological process that your furniture has undergone. First, it was disassembled into its individual parts and after treatment it was refinished, for this purpose bone glue was used, the whole body was impregnated with linen fermage after removing the old varnish, which returns the old parched wood its moisture and also emphasizes the veneer pattern. The new finish on your piece is a shellac polish. Shellac is a natural resin contained in the secretions of the lac worm. The scales of this resin are pickled in 99% alcohol and the resulting solution is “polished” in many layers onto the veneer until a continuous glossy surface is created. All this process is original and using traditional materials.

Of course, we guarantee the furniture refurbished by us or the work done by us. However, it is imperative that maintenance and storage instructions are followed. However, we do not waive any repairs or maintenance.

In case of minor damage, the polish can be polished and thus restored. And major damage will require the polish to be removed and a new polish to be applied using normal procedures. We wish you to avoid any damage if possible, but if there is any accident, remember that EVERYTHING can be repaired!!! We are here for you.

We recommend that after approximately 2 years, you take advantage of our additional “service restorer” routine maintenance services in the form of polishing your furniture to keep it as freshly restored.

We hope that your furniture will serve you well for a long time.

Thank you for saving history with us.

Atelier Fiala Team

In order for your furniture to keep its new shine for a long time, it is necessary to follow certain rules

  • First of all, it is necessary to remove the foil in which we delivered the furniture to you (long-term exposure to the foil could damage the shellac polish).
  • Do not use any furniture polish for about three weeks, just wipe off the dust with a dry cloth (the shellac polish must cure properly).
  • After this time we recommend using “Pronto with beeswax”, the consistency of this product is creamy and reliably pulls the dust out of all pores without disturbing the polish.
  • Avoid using water-based polishes, as these will disturb the shellac and make the surface dull and grey. Also, any prolonged exposure to water (when watering flowers, spills, etc.) can cause the same problems.
  • Shellac polish is a historic varnish that has its own specifics and is soluble in alcohol. Therefore, avoid putting the surface in direct contact with alcohol, which will damage the surface.
  • Higher temperatures combined with increased humidity will damage the polish such as frosted mug wheels. The polyurethane will tarnish in the areas of damage.
Exposure to sunlight oxidizes the polish and the finish dulls and clarifies (the natural colour of the wood is lost)
  • In the event of exposure to higher than normal temperatures, the politura is irreversibly damaged – it cracks (flakes) or separates from the surface swelling, e.g. by the action of electrical equipment (computer, heater, etc.) that is in direct contact with the politura or a nearby heat source or sunlight in conjunction with the wrapping material or behind the glass filling.
  • Your furniture was made many years ago and even though we have added moisture in the wood fibers, we still need to maintain that moisture. Therefore, we recommend using humidifiers or placing a bowl of water under the furniture so that the desired humidity is between 55% – 60% moisture in the area around the furniture. Drying out would result in drying and thus cracks in the wood years.
